Modern Servicing and Repair Appliances Redu c e Periods Which Vehicles Need Spend Off the Road

TCt reduce the time that vehicles need spend off the road, and to offset rising labour costs, manufacturers of transport service equipment, whose latest designs are exhibited at Earls Court, have incorporated many features in their products to ease andspeed operation.

• Enabling workpieces to be raised qUickly to convenient height, two benches with elevating tables are on display. That of Skyhi, Ltd., is priced at £47 and the table is 2 ft. 9 in. high in. the raised position, whilst the Nike 15-cwt. model of Lawrence Edwards and . Co. (Engineers), Ltd., is mounted on wheels. Edwards also have a 15-ton jack with the hydraulic-pump handle on a 7-ft. extension. This allows the ram unit to be used to raise vehicles with a long rear overhang.

Epco, Ltd., introduce their EJ5 3,000-1b. twin-saddle jack, and Lake and

Elliot, Ltd., a If range of Millex jacks which supplement the more heavily made Millenium types. The Epco light hydraulic hoist, as well as being offered

in the form of a floor crane, is also available for fitting to vehicles as a loader. V. L. Churchill, Ltd., present net/kr 1-ton and 1+-ton floor cranes, and the Weaver Manufacturing and Engineering Co., Ltd., a hoist which allows individual components to be removed.

Allowing vehicles to be elevated with unsprung weight relieved, the trackless hoist exhibited by Skyhi has a capacity of 3 tons and costs 1220. Laycock Engineering, Ltd., display a 127ton electric hoist which can be installed without excavadon. Platform members are 25 ft. long, and the width between the three pairs of pillars is 8 ft. 9 in-Steel ramps for supporting vehicles in the

raised position are introduced by Thomas Meldrum, Ltd.

Meldruen, together with Jenks Bros., Ltd., and C. R. Tipping and Co., Ltd., show new small tools. The .Meldrum universal box-spanner set covers most popular sizes of nut and the Company, besides introducing a line of sparkingplug spanners, have widened their range of double-ended box spanners. The

Jenks AVT 280 torque wrench has a t,-in. square drive and is continuously adjustable between 40-280 in./lb. Ratchet wrenches with and 1-in, square drives incorporate mechanisms to prevent unintentional reversing, and a ratchet wrench with a +-in. square drive has a novel pawl-change device. Tappet wrenches in chrome-alloy steel and dropforged wrench sets are also shown by these makers. Twin pawls are featured by a Tipping ratchet with j'-in. square drive. To provide for a power drill to be attached to a workpiece, a magnetic attachment made by Wolf Electric Tools, Ltd.. has a conventional column and headstock, but at the base are a number of magnets which become energized by mains current. A two-stage switch provides a degree of magnetism sufficient for accurate positioning of the bit, and a higher amount to secure the drill when operating. A chain is provided as a safeguard against power failure, and a saddle is available so that the attachment can be used on curved surfaces. A number of Bosch and Lesto portable electric tools is featured by Scintilla, Ltd.

Tables in which parts may neatly be contained in partitioned sections are exhibited by J. A. Ryley, Ltd. One , model is for general purposes, another for use when petrol engines are being stripped, and a third for oil-engine work. Intended for employment by small fleet owners, the Handilap is a moderately priced injector tapper displayed by Morris and Ingram (London), Ltd, This company's Meter-Mite injection pump test bench is also produced for the small repair shop; it has a metering block which takes the place of the usual six injectors.

The Injectester, made by the Dunedin Engineering Co., Ltd., is an instrument for chefking injectors, delivery-valve seats and plungers while an engine is running. It costs £53 and is supplied with couplings to fit 12-mm. and 14-mm. connections. The Diestester may also be used when the engine is running to check compressions, and the Injectorrieter is intended for examining injectors alone. Respective prices are 125 and £30. The Autotester, at £12 10s., is for testing the compressions of petrol engines.

Variable Speed Improvements have been made to the Major fuel-pump test bench produced by Leslie Hartridge, Ltd. The equipment now has infinitely variable speed without belt change or clutch. Suitable for distributor-type pumps, it is shown alongside a Smokemeter. a smoke-detection instrument mounted on a trolley which can carry a charging unit and batteries, or a mains rectifier. The Merlin Engineering Co.. Ltd., exhibit their latest types of

Servicennaster injector reconditioning machine and Calimaster fuel-pump test bench.

A battery charger with an output of 5 amp. is an addition to the Davenset range of Partridge, Wilson and Co., Ltd. A portable engine starter displayed by the company is priced at £58 and can charge a 12-v. battery at 50 amp. Crypton Equipment, Ltd., also have a portable engine starter; known as the Double 30. it has an output of 150 amp, for boosting, 30 amp, for fast charging and 71 amp, for slow charging. The Crypton Boostmaster is an even more powerful type.

Five Mini-Tester instruments shown by these exhibitors are claimed to be the least expensive of their kind. They comprise an ignition tester, a combined ammeter and voltmeter, an exhaust-gas analyser, an electrical tachometer and an electronic distributor-dwell tester. Incorporating all the equipment needed for testing and tuning engines, the B1000 bay unit measures aproximately 12 ft. wide by 7 ft. high.

B52 Sparking-plug cleaners are to be seen on the stands of Lodge Plugs, Ltd., and the Champion Sparking Plug Co., Ltd. The Lodge product costs £6 6s. and is recommended for use in conjunction with a water trap so, that the abrasive compound will not become moist. This accessory is 12 5s. The Champion 800 cleaner has a water trap as standard, and a double-filter cleaner bag which is simple to service.

Champion also show their Plugometer, a handy plate with a series of coloured pictures of plug ends in diffbrent conditions. By comparison of an actual plug with the pictures, the unit can be found to be normal, burned, petrol-fouled and so on. Feeler gauges and a gap-setting tool are attached to the plate, which sells at 3s. 6d.

Wheel balancers are coming into wide use for commercial-vehicle servicing since it has been realized that the benefits are not solely to be gained by fast cars. Laycock display the Laycock-Hofmann balancer by means of which wheels may be balanced, it is claimed, to within * oz. A static and dynamic balancer suitable for almost all types of bolt-on and centre-lock wheel has been produced by the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and the appliance is stated to be easily set up and operated so that wheels may be centred without reference to tables.

The balancer shown by Triangle Products, Ltd., produces a scribed chart

indicating the amount and area of static and dynamic balance. Together with new benchand pedestal-type spot welders, this company offer Bern equipment for checking track geometry.

Roller brake testers are further devices coming into greater use. Triangle have a reasonably priced air-operated model suitable for vehicles weighing up to 5,000 lb., and Joseph Bradbury and Sons, Ltd., a two-wheeled electrically driven type with gauges which may be either wall-mounted or on a pedestal.

Hydraulic-ram equipment, in conjunction with which a variety of fittings may be employed for tasks ranging from bearing removal to body-panel repair, is found in many up-to-date Workshops. E. P. Barrus (Concessionaires), Ltd., who market Black Hawk Porto Power appliances of this description, introduce the Multi-Grip assembly which secures a workpiece in any desired position by means of swivel heads, thus affording the operator the use of both hands. The Churchill company are exhibiting a new 50-ton hydraulic press.

The Weaver concern and C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd., show new lines in lubrication and vehicle-cleaning equiprnent. Four types of Weaver Powerflo portable lubricator, each of which. has a fully swivelling extension,. may be inspected. Adaptors are fixed.by bayonet couplings. The latest type of Weaver Ever Ready Monster steam-jet cleaner is priced at £483 15s.

Wakefield have turned their attention to facilitating the transfer of lithiumbased and other non-self-levelling greases from factory-filled containers, and have produced a floating grease pump. It may be placed in 1-cwt. kegs or 400-16. drums and floats upon the grease, sucking its way down with an absence of channelling and cavitation. The Wakefield detergent sprayer for pressure-washing the undersides of vehicles, or for applying any airliquid mixture, is the other innovation. A further piece of . lubrication equipment is the Nubrex lever-operated grease gun made by Ch. J. Neuman, Ltd. Of ste,e1 construction, it may be loaded with cartridges or by other usual means, although the cartridge method is recommended to save time and waste of grease, and the variety of nozzles offered includes a flexible hose connection.

Operators who wish to -apply underbody protection compounds to their vehicles-another practice which results in reducing time spent by vehicles out of service-might inspect the Versatal airoperated pump shown by Stewart-Warner, Ltd. It is capable of delivering all kinds of heavy and abrasive compounds, and the delivery equipment has a regulator for the pump motor and another for the spray-gun atomizer.

Many operators, when replenishing the fuel tanks of their vehicles, do not fill _ with a certain gallonage, but with an amount to top up the tank. Spillage is apt to occur when this is done, but the Weaver automatic fuel-filler nozzle has been designed to eliminate it when caused by over-filling or a blow-back from an air lock.

Filter for Oil Fuel Makers of popular used-oil filters found in • many garages, Stream-Line Filters, Ltd., have now brought out a filter for oil fuel. ,Employing the edgefiltration principle, it is stated to be capable of removing all solid particles down

to 1 micron in size. Cleaning of a different kind is the job of the Floormaster suction cleaner of New Welbeck, Ltd. Mounted on a three-wheeled trolley, it has a detachable large-bore extension tube with a wide nozzle.

Engine reconditioners may inspect the 4860 48-in, crankshaft grinder displayed by Prince (Kingston) Engineers, Ltd. Priced at £1,495, it complements the latest version of the 80-in, grinder, on which the stroke can be increased or decreased during the grinding operation. The tailstock chuck is adjustable radially after the crankshaft has been mounted. The company also show an instantaneous stroke measuring vernier attachment which shows the mean stroke of any crank throw independently of the roundness of the crankpin.

Bertram Thomas (Engineers), Ltd., produce storage equipment for holders of large stocks and their latest Tiltrack unit has retractable hopper bins. It is suggested that it may be used for the separate bulk storage of such parts as shackle pins, with their nuts and washers, so as not to waste space if they were accommodated together with the springs. The rack is 12 ft. 6 in. high.

Many novel exhibits are intended to facilitate tyre maintenance. Tip Top Vulcanizing Products have an airoperated remover for light covers, and a repair kit for giant tubeless tyres by means of which repairs to cuts of up to in. can be made without removal from the wheel. Regrooving of the tread after the original pattern has worn away -a process adopted by numbers of operators who use thick-treaded premium tyres-adds to life before a remould is necessary, and Tip Top offer two tools for this. The Rillfit 3 has a cutting width of 1-22 mm. and a depth of cut of /-12 mm. The Rillfit 4 has a transformer which may be adjusted so that the blades are fed with the right amount of heat.

The Bead-Eaza is a simple bead breaker produced by Stenor, Ltd. It has two jaws, one of which is pivoted and caused to move inwards by pressure on a lever. Tyre valves which, after being offered up through the hole in the rim of the wheel, may be turned and tightened, are introduced by Romac Industries, Ltd. Known as Swivel Stem valves, they are available in five sizes which cover all heavy tubes. The company have also produced a moisture separator for air compressors.

Fit, Ltd., exhibit various models in their C series remoulding machines which feature automatic tyre extractors. These are stated to reduce the handling involved and save time in the remoulding process. The company have developed a large machine for processing tractor tyres.
