ALTHOUGH the display of equipment in the accessories and components section of the Show covers exhibits as diverse as fog lamps and windows, gaskets and instruments, the theme commonly underlying development by all manufacturers is an endeavour towards greater refinement. That the modern vehicle becomes gradually, more sophisticated, with no sacrifice of efficiency and reliability but rather an enhancement of these qualities, is greatly attributable to their efforts.

FilterManufacturers have improved tlieir. products. not only to achieve better removal of dirt but also to facilitate servicing. The paper-element air filter of Coopers Mechanical Joints, Ltd., for example, requires cleaning only by gentle tapping or reverse blowing, The Automotive Products. Co., Ltd., have a new range of large-capacity air filters, together with Purolator Micronic washable fitters for crankcase and hydraulic reservoir breathing. .

.There are three novel oil filters. That of the AC-Delco Division of General Motors, Ltd., is about half the size Of the types it supersedes, whilst the Maxivee model of Vokes, Ltd., has a selfsupportiqg medium which allows best use to be made of the space in the bowl. This enables, it is stated, replacement periods to be extended to 10,000 miles. The Glacier Metal Co., Ltd., now offer a compact centrifugal oil cleaner, the GFO, for light engines, and for petrol filtration the Zenith Carburetter Co., Ltd., have a stnall unit for direct attachment to most makes of carburetter, Glacier also exhibit new dry-bearing materials which can carry substantial

-loads without lubrication, and have evolved a surface treatment to provide metals with good bearing properties. Everlube is the name of a lubricant marketed by Stedali and Co., Ltd., for treating machined parts such as gears to reduce wear and provide lubrication should the ordinary means fail. ' Improvements in engine components are represented by the use by W. G. James, Ltd., of a new alloy for valves, and a seal designed by Sheepbridge Engineering, Ltd., to overcome the loss of oil through valve guides. James show valves made in nitrogen-steel material which are stated to last for 200,000 miles. Effectiveness. of the Sheepbridge product depends upon the contraction properties of a ring which prevents the higher pressure in the rocker box equalizing with manifold pressure.

A new brake-facing material for public service vehicles is displayed by Hubert H. P. Trist and Co_, Ltd. It is of the woven zinc-bonded type of material. Tecalemit, Ltd., whose recently announced nylon tubing is likely to find wide application, have used it for an automatic chassis-lubrication system for light and medium vehicles, supplementing the Syndromic equipment for heavies. The oil reservoir is in the cab, where it can_ be easily replenished, whilst the method of drive is by means of a flexible cable from the gearbox.

AC-Delco show their latest type of distributor which has a large oil reservoir for continuous lubrication of the bearings and requires servicing only every 5,000 miles.. Speedier starting is allowed by a combined ignition and starter switch, exhibited together with an electric horn of the vibrating-air type.

Flashing lamps are exhibited by L. F. Brenner, Ltd., Flexible Lamps, Ltd., and London Bankside Products, Ltd. The Brenner type is stated to be reasonably priced and measures 101 in. long, 2+ in. wide and 2+ in. deep. Flexible Lamps' Rubbolite model is flush-fitting and may be inspected together with a new stoptail lamp. The Sparta product of L.B.P. incorporates rear as well as flashing bulbs, whilst Spartomation types are sold at 5s. each with bulb in white, red and amber.

A vehicle radio set which can be purchased with or without loudspeaker, fitting kit and frontal accessories from Vauxhall Motors' sales organization at a most competitive price may be examined at Stand 86

Operators interested in battery developments might visit the Buckland Battery Co., Tungstone Products, Ltd., and the Young Accumulator Co., Ltd. Buckland are exhibiting for the first time and have a wide range of equipment sold under two-year guarantee. CKW batteries of Tungstone are newly offered in hardwood crates designed to give good protection against shocks and finished with an antisulphuric treatment, and Young have a heavy-duty battery available with factorysealed charge.

Park Bros., Ltd., produce batteries-with a four-year guarantee, and as makers of other electrical components have designed a current-voltage regulator to replace the proprietary RB310 series being fitted to numerous vehicles. A panel upon which all the instruments are electrically operated is featured by S. Smith and Sons (England), Ltd. Advantages are stated to be ease of dustproofing, absence of piping, and simplicity of fitting and removal. The company's R550 heater is for mounting in coaches and measures 1 ft. 11,in. by 81 in. by 10 in.

Latest types of Norway cab heater made by the Key-Leather Co., Ltd., have been approved by A.E.C. and Trojan, and a unit developed in conjunction with the M.C.W. concern is the 666 trolleybus heater. Various other K-L heaters have been improved to afford better heat capacity, and for demisting rear windows, the company introduce a 33-in, element which can be bent to shape the contour concerned. Known as the Clearview, it retails at £2 19s. 6d, and consumes 70 W. A four-position lever-type switch which allows main beams to be " flashed " either when the vehicle is being driven on sidelights only or on dipped beams, and a petrol-contents gauge for Volkswagen commercial vehicles are other K-L innovations.

The Avialex combustion heater is featured by Delaney Gallay, Ltd. One type burns fuel oil and has an output of 26,000 B.T1i.U., whilst a petrol-burning model delivers 12,000 B.Th.U. A third type is built in a portable cage, has an output of 24,000 B.Th.U. burning petrol, and is stated to be intended for pre-heating and starting engines or defreezing machinery. The company also have water type heaters suitable for a number of the latest goods vehicles, and display RKN safety belts priced from £1 17s. 6d. to £3 3s. These are commended to coach operators.

Glazed fittings have been improved . by the , specialized makers in this field. Auster, Ltd., have a full-fronted assembly on their stand, consisting of a lantern-type windscreen with a sliding signalling window and, on the near side, a hinged window operated by a two-position toggle to provide draught-free ventilation. The Auster Rotavent may be employed either as a front ventilator or a side window, has a rotary action and may be used by individual passengers.

The Streamlight horizontal sliding window is shown by the Rawlings Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The Connex sliding window is made by the concern for estate cars and similar van conversions.

Weathershields, Ltd., introduce the PerVent roof ventilator which may be raised three ways. The frame is of light alloy and the Perspex may be supplied in different shades. The Freedom vent has provision for instant release from inside or outside in emergencies. A new baffle has been designed for use with Flomatic ventilators.

Hallam, Sleigh and Cheston, Ltd., feature the Juno sliding window, Corvent roof hatch and Corlite driver's seat. The Juno is of the double-slider type, or can be supplied with the leading section fixed. The Corvent is of moulded Perspex and may be opened front or rear or wholly raised.

Other bodywork fittings include plasticized destination screens made by the Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd. They are said to be long-lasting, easily Refinement-Accessory Makers' Aim (cont.) washed and to wind with accuracy. Brynfoam polyurethane foam made by Cooper and Co. (Birmingham), Ltd., is a light material which • may be used for upholstery. Lintafoam (Sales), Ltd., show Foamedge p.v.c, covered weatherstrip for draught and dust sealing.

Quick-Fit number plates, which may be rapidly made up from stock, are exhibited by 131tiernel Bros., Ltd.' Each base plate has spaces for six letters or numbers. Unused spaces show a red or silver reflector. Equipment and Engineering exhibit the Notek Reversascope, a 9-in. by 5f-in. mirror which is fitted below the cab and provides a rear view from near to road level through a glazed panel in the cab floor. It is stated to be specially suitable for vans and costs fl 4s., A radio selling for only £18 18s. is available from Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., and is shown installed in a vehicle on their stand. It may be purchased without loudspeaker, fitting kit, knobs, scale and escutcheon for £15 I Is. .1.d.•, thereby making *a strong appeal to drivers who can improvise these extras.. Fitting kits are made to suit -Bedfordmodels, but a handy-man . could easily install the basic receiver in any vehicle.
