Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Minister of Transport has ordered a rehearing of applications by Messrs. Sunter Bros., Northallerton, to run services from Topcliffe R.A.F. Station to London, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow and Manchester, and from Leeming R.A.F. Station to London, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow.

The firm applied to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority to provide services from Topcliffe to 11 destinations and from Leeming to nine, but its application was refused. An appeal was lodged and was heard by Mr. Tudor Davies. The Railway Executive, United Automobile Services, Ltd., Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., Messrs. Fawdon Bros. and Messrs. W. Simpson appeared as respondents.

Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for the appellant, submitted that neither camp was near a railway station. It was important to bear the relative cost of road and rail travel in mind. Tjae decision of the High Court in the Victoria Motors case, he contended, gave the railways the opportunity of objecting to operators wishing to cater for this type of traffic.

Mr. W. R. Hargrave, for all the respondents except Messrs. W. Simpson, said that the more road operators who were licensed for such work, the less would be the chance for the railways to reduce fares.

The Minister, announcing his order for the rehearing, said that he had insufficient evidence to make a firm decision. He made no order regarding other services for which licences had been refused.
