• Operators of old and smokey CVs face prosecution as vehicle examiners prepare to go on a nationwide emissions blitz this week.

The Vehicle Inspectorate has received its orders on how to crack down on offenders after secretary of state for transport Brian Mawhinney said that he would eradicate heavily polluting trucks (CM 13-19 October).

Examiners on roadside inspections will use mobile smoke detectors this month and in December on days to be set soon.

Allan Campbell, a scheme manager of the Vehicle Inspectorate who briefs examiners on policy, says the VI will be concentrate on urban areas.

Trucks found to be belching black smoke will be issued with a delayed prohibition order. If the smoke is so dense that it impairs vision, an immediate prohibition may be issued.
