Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SIX-WHEEL dump truck with a 20 cu.yd body and a gross weight rating of 39 tons has been introduced by Fader's Ltd. A payload of 24 tons can be carried in the new model which replaces the Foden 35-ton dump truck which could take a payload of 21 tons.

Power units which can be specified for the model are: Foden Mk VI, 180 bhp; Foden Mk VII turbocharged 225 bhp; Cummins NH 220 212 bhp; Cummins NH 250, 240 bhp; Leyland 0.680, 180 bhp; and Leyland 0.680 turbocharged 240 bhp diesels.

A new 17in. clutch has been developed for the model and this drives through a Foden 12-speed gearbox to the double-drive rear bogie.

Weight rating of the rear bogie is 32 tons—the redesigned axles have added stiffening ribs to deal with the load carried. Secondary reduction in the axles is at the hubs.

Power steering is standard and, in order to increase the payload, the centre of gravity of the load has had to be moved to the rear. The front axle is rated at 8 tons and is now fitted with rubber helper springs, while the rear springs are of new design; the rear suspension incorporates frame brackets with floating shackles—a change made to increase the capacity of the bearing areas at this point and to give better attachment between the spring brackets and the frame for the increased loads.

The tipping gear uses a Foden gear pump; chrome-plated Edbro rams are standard. The 20 cu.yd (heaped) body—which has a struck capacity of 18 cu.yd—is constructed from heat-treated Ducol steel plate and pressed-channel-section framework.

The body tapers upwards 6in. from front to rear and the floor incorporates a 15deg scow end. An integral canopy is provided at the front of the body to protect the cab and engine. A half cab is standard, this being of all-steel construction with straight pillars and panels.

One of these new dump trucks will be at the Scottish Show.
