It is with much regret that we learn of the death, in his 78th year, of Captain W. E. Hutchinson, O.B.E., who was one of the leading pioneers of Provincial motorbus services. His career commenced with training on H.M.S.

" Wureesthr," and at the age of 26 he was promoted to be commander, after which he served abroad, chiefly on the coast of India, for some 20 sears. In 1885 he was appointed marine superintendent in London to the British India Steam Navigation Co.

His association with the road transport industry started in 1906, when, with his son, he interested himself in a small motor service in Scotland. Later, in 1912, he became joint founder of United Automobile Services, Ltd., together with his son, Mr. E. B. Hutchinson, the present managing director of the company. Captain Hutchinson wtia director and secretary of the ,lompany from their formation, and largely because of his business capacity the company progressed in a remarkable way.
