Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BOTH the exhibits on this stand are in chassis form, and the new 2-ton model in particular is an instance of high show finish. The mechanical details of the smaller model are interesting to the student of design.

The radiator is of the built-up typo, and the four-cylinder monobloc engine has separate cylinders and crankcase. A , detachable head is fitted, this having two lifting eyes for ease of dismantling during repairs.

Side-by-side valves are employed, and running across the unit is a shaft in front of the cylinders, driving the magneto on the near side and the pump on the off side. Vertically mounted and driven from the same shaft is the dynamo. Behind this shaft is a bridge member, which acts as the forwardengine suspension point, another member bearing the rear end of the power unit.

The exhaust manifold is liberally ribbed for cooling purposes, the carburetter being on the off side, and the air intake running from it to the exhaust is cored in the cylinder head. A disc valve is situated in the air tract to regulate the temperature according to weather condition.S. • An electric starter is proyided,and a feature of.particular interest to The repair man is the fitting of flanges on the waterpiPes to avoid the necessity Tor breaking hose joints.

A cone clutch transmits the power to the four-speed gearbox which has a right-hand gate, but the lever itself is not situated therein; it moves on the right of the gate, and an indicating

finger actually shows the driver the gear in engagement at any particular time. 'Behind the gearbox is an open propeller shaft and a transmission brake operated by hand. The rear axle has an overhead .worm, and the method of taking the torque is interesting. Above the worm housing is an eye, which accommodates the end of a stout "rod,'.tlie other extremity being shackled to the rear cross-member of the frame. Radius rods are also fitted. There are

four-wheel brakes and single and twin pneumatics on the front and rear wheels respectively. Coming to the 4-tenser , which is more familiar, there are two separate cylinder blocks and inspection doors on the crankcase. As before, the magneto and pump are driven trona a cross-shaft, and the valves are covered by four separate cases. A cone clutch is fitted, and this has a clutch brake. The vehicle brakes are in the rear wheels and on the transmission. The same rear-axle layout is employed.

Chassis lubrication is by grease gun on bath models, and a point of interest lies in the clutch lubrication, as the grease gun also serves to force lubricant to the wearing surfaces and thus avoids the necessity, for constant attention. which so often obtains in the case of spigot bearings.

The layout of the engine of the 4tenser is suggestive of long life in that there are five crankshaft bearings lubricated by forced feed and the crankcase is three-point suspended in the frame to minimise the effects of chassis distortion. The valve layout gives T-headed cylinders, as there are two camshafts, the one operating the inlet valves and -the other the exhausts. Ball thrust races are used throughout the steering, enclosed in grease-tight housings.
