VAUXHALL EXHIBITED its new Combo van for the first time in the UK. The debut of the Fiat Doblò-based Combo van, however, signals the end of the much-loved Astravan, which will not be replaced when it goes off sale next year. Vauxhall MD Duncan Aldred said: “Astravan will be available until 2013, but is not being replaced. It is a falling niche that at its peak sold 10,000 units a year, but when you’ve got a van as good as the new Combo, you don’t need the Astravan.” Aldred added: “Vauxhall products are only sold in the UK and Ireland, allowing us to tailor the models and build a Britishness around the product.”

The Combo is available in two wheelbases, two heights and two GVWs, with payloads of up to 1,000kg and load volumes up to 4.2m3. Load volumes range from 3.4m3 to 4.2m3. Power comes from either a 1.3-litre, 1.6-litre or 2-litre CDTi engine, which offer a 87hp output for 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre engines, a 103hp output for the 1.6-litre model and 132hp from the larger unit. All 1.3-litre models get a five-speed manual transmission, while 1.6-litre and 2-litre models get a six-speed manual, and the option of a Tecshift automated manual transmission. All manual transmissions are available with Start/Stop technology.

Prices start from £13,855 for the L1H1 1.3-litre 87hp model, and rise to £17,355 for Sportive versions of the 2-litre engine.
