Perhaps in response to a poor Budget, rising fuel costs and the threat of tanker driver strikes, optimism among operators is waning: in April, the optimism score was just +19, down from March’s +28. A total of 57% said they are either very optimistic or fairly optimistic about the prospects for their business over the next 12 months, while 38% said they are not very opti mistic or not at all optimistic.
Those with the most bullish outlook are logistics and contract distribution firms: in April this sector recorded a 68/29 positive/ negative split.
Own-account operators posted splits of 52/41, while hire or reward hauliers were the least bullish with a 52/46 split.
