During the first four months of 2001 Exel has scooped up .£500m worth of contracts in the Midlands with the prospect of 800 new jobs. At the time of writing, seven of the nine new contracts had been finalised: Exel's global freight management division, MSAS Global Logistics, wins the international transport business of BIP, a major plastics and resins manufacturer based in the West Midlands. Exel has formed a dedicated team at its Birmingham of to manage the contract.

Exel officially opens its 25th warehouse for the Consumer-Europe division. Located near Rugby, the new Swift Valley centre was built specifically to meet the storage and distribution requirements of the Continental Can Company.

Exel clinches a three-year contract to provide logistics services for Littlewoods' Index Stores. Based at littlewoods' Moxley Southern regional distribution centre, Exel takes over a service previously supplied by Wincanton Distribution.

Safeway awards four-year contract to the Retail Division of Exel to provide logistics services from the new 29,000m2 Keresley Park regional distribution centre near Coventry. Safeway, an existing Exel client, is the second client to take a stake at Keresley. At the time of going to press, Keresley Park's first customer has not been disclosed.

Exel announces a "strategic partnership" with Sainsbury's. Based at a national transport service centre (NTSC ) near Coventry, the contract focuses on value-sharing through the development of '`efficient and environmentally friendly" transport methods.

Exel wins a five-year, multi-million-pound contract with Selfridges. This deal will involve building a 15,000m2 national distribution centre at Exel's site at Ham's Hall, near Daventry; the site is due to be fully operational by 2002.

Stationery-to-razors giant Mc UK consolidates its logistics operation at Exel's Watford Gap distribution centre.

Further good news followed the announcement of these contracts last month [April] when Exel unveiled contracts with four major consumer and healthcare product manufacturers in the US. The contracts, with Energizer, Unilever, Dentsply and Procter & Gamble, are worth a total of US$143m.
