The four-cylinder le carburettor unit has a imum torque of 149Nm lbft) at 3,600rpm.

he 2.74-tonne GVW four!el-drive pick-up, at £6,775, aces the old King Cab lel, and is fitted with the 2.4-litre 74kW(99hp) Z24S petrol engine which has a peak torque of 179Nm(132 lbft) at 2,80Orpm.

Both models have a fivespeed 0.82:1 overdrive top gearbox as standard with a floor-mounted gearchange. The 4 x4 model has an additional two-speed transfer case to provide all-wheel drive, and manually-operated free-wheeling front hubs.

Like the Mazda B2000 and Toyota Hi Lux, the Nissan pick-ups have a separate ladder-frame chassis and pickup bed design.

Its closed section frame has four cross members to ensure rigidity and variable thickness steel plate has been used to reduce the vehicle's unladen weight. Payload on both models is 1,215kg.

The 4x2 pick-up's cargo body is slightly shorter than the old model at 2,235mm, although its width is greater at 1,465. Like the Ford P100 it has double-skin sidewalls which help to minimise load damage.

Rope hooks and a tubular steel ladder rack are fitted as standard, and the rear tailgate opens up to 180 degrees.

Following previous models, the new pick-up range has torsion bar front suspension with telescopic dampers and an antiroll bar, and a leaf-sprung rear axle. Steering is recirculating ball giving an 11.2m turning circle on the 4x2 pick-up and 11.8m on the 4 x 4.

Both variants have ventilated front disc brakes and rear drum units. Like other Japa nese light commercials, the Nissan pick-ups have an umbrella-type dash-mounted handbrake lever.

A vinyl-covered three-man reclining bench seat is standard in either model, along with a push-button radio and vinyl floor covering. An 80 litre fuel tank is fitted.

Nissan UK says it has no immediate plans to bring a diesel pickup into the UK, despite the fact that diesel models are currently sold on the Continent, it may offer one later this year. An extended King Cab model will not be offered in Britain, however, following problems with vehicle taxation.
