Improving a Ford Rear Lamp.

The sender of the following commumication, has been awarded the extra payment of 5s. this week.

(2220) " A.V.T." (Wakefield writes :— "I daresay there are very few drivers of Ford one ton lorries who have not had trouble with the standard rear lamps, particularly When running with the lorry light. At any rate, I can answer for myself. No possible methods of shield

ing the lamp on ray machine seemed to be effective, and eventually I converted it to electric in the following manner :— " I bought a standard Ford bulb and holder and also an ordinary 4 volt bulb and holder, as well as a 4 volt 12 amp.hour accumulator. The wires from ‘the accumulator I led through the ventilation holes in the top Of the lamp. I connected a 4 volt lamp to them, supporting it near to the top of the lamp. I then fastened the Ford bulb and holder to the side of the lamp, wiring it up to the standard headlights. I controlled both of them through a three-way switch. When the engine was running, I used a Ford bulb and a magneto lighting set ; when the engine was stopped, I switched over and used the accumulator. " The latter, moreover, is a useful help when starting up on a cold morning. I keep a dry battery in stock, which I substitute for the accumulator when the latter is being recharged."

Miscellaneous Tips.

(2221) " W.I.C." (Brixton) writes I..— " I had a little trouble, with sparking plugs the other day, and in trying to re-set one on which the ends of the points had burnt away, leaving the gap too large, _I had the misfortune to break off the one which was attached to the body of the block. As is usual in such circumstances, I was without spares, and at first thought I should have to run along on three cylinders. However, I made shift to bend the central electrode until it was within the proper distance of the edge of the body of the plug. To my surprise, this was quite satisfactory and worked well.

" On another occasion, on the same lorry, I was travelling along quite merrily, when the engine suddenly stopped, after a cloud of black smoke had appeared from the silencer, clearly indicating carburetter trouble. I got down and examined that accessory, and discovered that the petrol float had punctured. I removed the float and tried filling the hole with soap, but this was not a success. I next.tried to get along by reducing the flow of petrol from the main supply, and although I could have got along that way with the help of 'frequent emptyings of the float, progress by this method was too slow to cornmend itself.

" I had, therefore, to devise some other method of getting along. Eventually I discovered a piece of flat spring whith once. ,belonged to the arm on the contact breaker of my magneto. I placed this under the fleet after again emptying same so that it helped to bold it in its upper position. With this, in conjunction/with a restricted petrol supply, I was able to get home without any further trouble."

Repair to a Broken Spring.

(2222) " N.A.G." (Itayton) writes :— "Same time ago I had the misfortune to break the top leaf of a front spring, at the -same. time the axle moved forward on the spring, thus making it impossible for me to think of trying to run on. got a lift to the nearest blacksmith's shop, and got him to cut me four pieces of bar each about 5 ins. long. and 2 ins. wide. In the ends of one I had in. holes drilled and in the others g in. holes. I clamped this to the spring as shown in

the sketch, and, so equipped, was able to run home and even to run for another day or two without further trouble."

A Useful Magneto Repair.

(2223) " H.J." (Stoke-on-Trent)

writes :—" I recently had the misfortune to lose the fibre block from the contact breaker of my magneto. It had dropped out on the road and could not be found, so that something had to be done to get things going again. I-took a small length of rubber, cut from a cycle tyre inner tube, vrapped it up, and bound it, into position where the fibre block ought to have been. , This worked quite well; so successfully, indeed, that the rubber was left in position for quite a long time, -until it was convenient to fit a proper fibre block."
