Family dealer DG Taylor takes its turn under the Webwatch microscope

Words: James Clark

Company: DG Taylor Commercial Vehicles Address: www.dgtaylor.co.uk

Homepage

The DG Taylor website is clean and simple, with two navigation menus that enable you to find your way around quickly. Use the vertical menu on the left to select a category of vehicle and dive straight into the stock list, or use the horizontal menu at the top to access other pages on the site such as ‘Contact Us’.

In the top menu, you will also find a ‘Stock List’ link that takes you to a page displaying all items for sale, regardless of category.

Product search

Stock is divided into four categories: rigids; tipping trailers; tractor units; and miscellaneous vehicles. There were no rigids available at the time of writing but plenty of tractor units and, as DG Taylor is a Wilcox distributor, it was no surprise to see a couple of 2011 tipping trailers from that manufacturer in stock.

For each vehicle in your chosen category, the website displays a thumbnail image and information including make, model, year and mileage. If an item is already sold, this is clearly indicated on the image. Click on any image or the corresponding ‘More’ link to be taken to a page that includes a detailed description of the item and, in many cases, several additional photos. The photography is high quality and shows stock from a range of angles; in-cab shots are available for many of the tractors. Click on any photo to view a larger, downloadable version in a pop-up gallery.

Prices for all stock are on application only.

Other features on the product information page include: a downloadable PDF datasheet (useful for printing or emailing to a colleague); an online form to enquire about the item; and, to cater for the export market, a currency converter provided by Google Finance, so exchange rates are updated automatically.

Likes and dislikes

We like

✓ Good use of product photos ✓ Downloadable PDF datasheets of each vehicle

We’re not sure

X Gallery section still under construction X No search function available on site

For the benefit of the export market, the website can be translated into five languages using the icons at the top of any page (although the stock list is only available in English).

There is no search function on the website, but this would only pose a problem if the stock list was larger.

Other pages

From the top menu you can access two other useful pages: ‘Ordering’ includes information on purchasing, while ‘Contact Us’ gives the usual details as well as a map to the firm’s Driffield, Yorkshire, site. For more about the firm, download a PDF brochure using the link on the homepage. This menu also contains a link through to a ‘Gallery’ page that is under construction.

Conclusion

A solid website that is easy to use and rightly puts the focus on the stock.
