Commonly thought to have been invented in Holland, the illuminated headboard was actually first seen in Denmark in 1970, having been developed by a firm called SRI.
Originally made from an aluminium box with Perspex white sheeting, and illuminated using a 38mm fluorescent tube, headboards have changed very little since they first appeared on the roads. They no longer have a square front surface, and have instead followed the design of trailers with curved and more aerodynamic profiles.

Richard Dixon, www.spatz.co.uk: “In the old days, tubes would last between 2,500 hours and 3,500 hours, but technology now means tubes can last between 10,000 hours and 60,000 hours. There are four basic types of design being produced by SRI.
“They are the traditional SRI Classic, the SRI Aero, the SRI Slim and the new SRI Flat Sign. Some use fluorescent tubes, but LED lighting will definitely be the way forward for headboards.”
