Super-Liner

When Mack’s new conventional made its US debut in 1977 as a replacement for the venerable R700 it was the boldest roadgoing bonneted Bulldog yet produced. Its huge aluminium and chrome grille

provided nearly 10,000cm2 of radiator cooling for the most powerful Mack and ‘vendor’ engines then available. Super-Liner rapidly gained legendary status when it was launched Down Under in 1980, its arrival coinciding with the next generation of mighty Mack V8 Econodyne E9 400 and 440 diesels. The powerful beat of the 16.4-litre Mack “thumperdyne” instantly won fans.

In 1985 Mack released the definitive evolution of the model, the Super-Liner II, with its updated cab and bonnet raised to accommodate the even more powerful EM9 500 (the same 500hp V8 fitted in the Renault Magnum), making it the most powerful truck on Aussie highways and outback roads at the time and the must-have prime mover for roadtrain and construction haulers. With its glittering chrome bulldog atop its elongated nose, the Super-Liner is still spoken of with awe. (GR)
