Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DIESELTRUCKS that pump out harmful pollutants are posing a serious threat to public health and should be banned from city centres, says the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

It says the World Health Organisation believes there is no safe limit for exposure to the tiny soot particulates in diesel exhausts known as PMI0s, yet the CSP's analysis reveals high levels across the UK. This is despite the introduction of Euro-3 engines which have cut truck exhaust emissions by 90% .This will rise to 98% when Euro-4 engines are rolled out later this year.

Tokyo has already responded to WHO concerns by considering banning vehicles with certain types of engines. CSP chair of council Grahame Pope says the UK should follow suit: "Diesel engine manufacturers should produce engines with zero emissions of PM10 and local authorities should follow the Japanese example by banning these vehicles from builtup areas," But the SMM'T points out that engines are getting cleaner. And a spokesman asks: "How else are operators meant to make deliveries into London?

"There is still no real alternative to diesel as electrical vehicles are not yet viable.
