One of its core concerns is improving life for everyone, and it doesn't just pay lip service to those trendy buzzwords "corporate social responsibility". Charitable trusts, educational institutes, an arts magazine, a national centre for the performing arts and clubs to develop sporting talent in India are among its interests.

Last year, the Group spent £9.4m on social welfare projects and £21.5m on environmental projects. Tata Motors is involved in this its projects include improving education and agriculture and helping villages become self-reliant. On a more local basis, when we visited its production plant in Pune to the south-east of Mumbai, we were intrigued to learn about the co-operatives set up by the firm. Indian legislation prohibits women from working in factories, so to find some employment for employees' wives and relatives the firm set up a co-operative which produces chapattis for the plant's canteens. The 15,000 employees at the plant all have lunch there -the co-op's members roll 60,000 chapattis a day
