Cisternas Cobo (UK) will launch a new lightweight petroleum tank trailer at the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) show at Telford in April.

Sales director Terry Morgan says the latest six-compartment triaxle Cobo "rite" will weigh some 400kg less than its standard six-compartment model with a 5,500kg tare.

The new Cabo trailer tank will go headto-head with a similar lightweight product from market-leader Nei, which announced plans to unveil its own sub-f ive-tonne trailer, based on its ADR 5000 Series, at the FPS show late last year (CM4 November 2004).

Morgan reckons that with more operators, especially those hauling for the supermarkets, carrying a smaller range of products the trend will be towards tanks with fewer compartments, "Why do you need six compartments just to carry two products? he asks.

Morgan reports that although tanker manufacturers have spent a lot of time cutting down weight from pipework, manlids and baffles, they have not fully addressed the issue of compartments: "The trend will be towards bigger tanks with fewer compartments," The new Cobo tank also features revised aluminium chassis extrusions which save some 50kg over box-section designs. "All our aluminium chassis subframe rails have now got a surface hardness up to that of mild steel," Morgan reports, However, he believes that a five-tonne tare is probably as low as any manufacturer should go: "I'd agree with that have to do a lot to get much below 5,000kg. We've looked at circular designs (Cabo uses maxsection tanks) as you can have it thinner and save some weight, but then you have to deal with loading heights." Morgan, adds that a circular section tank with a higher centre of gravity also presents challenges when meeting roll-over regs.

Alongside its new tanker Cisternas Cobo (UK) will also launch a range of rigid tanks at FPS.
