• A union boss has won the backing of northern Labour MPs to press for "an urgent review of legislation controlling truck drivers' terms and conditions".
Transport & General Workers Union's northern region commercial officer Maurice Britton now plans to seek support from his local Tory MPs.
In his public campaign Britton will be seeking to reduce the maximum daily driving time to around eight hours and the working day to around 11 hours. He will also be fighting for more truckstops and better sick pay provision and salaries: "When we find the views of our MPs we will hopefully effect a change in legislation that will make the roads safer for us all," says Britton.
