• Niels Christaffersen of North East Transport & Plant Hire (Broughty Ferry), was ordered to pay fines and costs totalkng £312.12 at Penrith magistrates after admitting falsifying a tacho chart and failing to take sufficient weekly rest.

Christoffersen, of WedRoad, Moffat, was said to have produced a weight ticket to a traffic examiner showing his vehicle at the weighbridge after the chart showed he had stopped work.

Defending, Brian Van Zuylen said Christoffersen had been driving for less than 12 months at the time. He kept getting lost and he made up time by falsifying records. He had found the pressure and anxiety associated with driving too much. Christoffersen was fined £112 per offence and £88:12 prosecution costs. NETPH drivers were ordered to pay more than 27,000 in fines and costs by Carlisle magistrates, after admitting the falsification of tacho charts (CM 11-17 Nov). Members of the company's management are due to appear before the magistrates accused of aiding and abetting the drivers. (For update, see page 4.)
