Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I have only recently been employed within the industry, but feel I must agree 100% with the comments of MJ Pearson (CM13-19 May).

Until recently I saw trucks only as a nuisance fl was delayed behind one on the way to work, etc.

Motorists—the general public—are very short-sighted when it comes to the haulage industry and, as most government officials are totally removed from the industry, they share the view that it is environmentally unsound and causes road congestion.

They have tended to group hauliers together with smokers and drinkers, forcing annual increases of tax and encouraging these "nasty habits" to disappear.

We have already lost a lot of our industry to cheaper foreign imports, and although the action being taken is necessary to make the Government take notice, it is also doing little to ensure the general public is supportive. A more positive message in media other than industry magazines to gather support from the general public is desperately needed to make sure hauliers are no longer seen as pests but as hardworking individuals who are struggling to survive.

Miss A Jarvis, c/o Truck & Trailer FInance, Basingstoke.
