1111 The level of law breaking among foreign truck operators was exposed again last week when more than half the vehicles stopped at a series of roadside checks led to prosecutions.
The seven checks between 21-24 May were part of the Vehicle Inspectorate's Operation Baywatch which targeted vehicles travelling to and from ports on the Irish Sea, The 72 foreignoperated trucks checked attracted 42 prosecutions, for hours, records and overloading offences.
Traffic examiners also checked 548 UK vehicles, finding 95 offences which MI require further investigation. Of 228 UK vehicles weighed, 24 were found to be overloaded.
Vehicle examiners checked 272 vehicles: they issued 53 immediate and 40 delayed prohibitions.
A Vehicle Inspectorate spokesman says the high number of prohibitions was due to a sizeable police presence at the check. "This enabled us to be more selective in targeting potentially defective vehicles," he says.
• The safety standards of fairground vehicles has come into question after a spot check in Scarborough revealed a series of faults. Six vehicles and trailers were checked by the VI, the police and Customs officers: they all attracted immediate prohibition for defects with their brakes, suspension, lights, steering and tyres.
