MERSEYSIDE Chamber of Commerce and Industry's surface transport committee is to continue to campaign for a relaxation in the restrictions on the quantities of liquefied petroleum gas that go through the Mersey Tunnels.
After considering a letter from the Merseyside County Council advising that an appeal for the existing regulations to be amended had been turned down, the committee stated it appreciated the County Council's con cern over safety. But it said that the mddern designs of tanks and fittings used for liquified petroleum gas made such equipment at least as safe as any petrol engined vehicle. "Increasing use is being made of liquified petroleum gas as a propellant for commercial vehicles. This technical development is being somewhat inhibited by the existance of the present Mersey Tunnel restrictions," the committee said.
Chamber members with the relevant expertise have been asked to prepare a technical case for resubmission to the county.
