frHE deletion of a total of 18 vehicles from various licences of W. H. Hall and Son (Heol-y-Cyw) Ltd. by the South Wales Licensing Authority, Mr. R. Jackson, is an unhappy sequel to a public inquiry in February, 1965, when the LA suspended six vehicles for three months following evidence of unsatisfactory maintenance.

Since that date notifications of a number of convictions in various parts of the country, in relation to the poor state of the company's vehicles, have been recorded by the South Wales, LA, and in November, 1965 Cardiff City Police requested the examination of a Hall and Son's vehicle. An immediate prohibition followed and subsequently fines totalling £200 were imposed by local magistrates.

Mr. Jackson ordered an immediate fleet inspection, and reports from examiners revealed that the condition of the vehicles had worsened since the previous examination which culminated in the inquiry of February, 1965.

The company was invited to attend a public inquiry under Section 178 of the Act, but declined to do so.

The LA accordingly reviewed the situation and had regard to the number of con victions recorded since February, 1965, to the recent report of the fleet inspection and to the views of the area mechanical engineer.

He concluded that the number of vehicles Hall and Son could reasonably operate should match their facilities, in staff and equipment, for vehicle maintenance.

Hall and Son recently surrendered licences for another 18 vehicles, most on Contract A licences.
