20 MILES BY BUS TO COLLECT MEDICINE

THE effect of the .National Health Service on bus operation was mentioned to the Scottish Licensing Authority at Stornoway, when Messrs. Galson Stornoway Motor Services Applied for permission to change their timetable.

It was stated that doctors in rural ireas no longer supplied medicine's to latients as much as in the past, and villagers had to travel into Stornoway, 20 miles away, to collect medicines and prescriptions. If the timetable were :hanged, they could make the inward Ind return journey on the same firm's sus, instead of buying two-single tickets travel on different firms' vehicles. Passengers also wished to travel to kornoway to cash cheques, because igriculturat subsidies were paid by iheque, and they did not wish to waste t whole day in doing so. Decision was deferred.

WE regret to record the death, at the age of 79, of MR. BENJAMIN WHITTAKER, who was responsible for introducing into this country the first proprietary type of universal joint—the Spicer. This he handled until his friend. Mr. Hardy. took over the manufacturing rights.

Another notable unit first introduced into England by Mr. Whittaker was the spiral-bevel gear now so widely used as the final drive for back axles. At the time of his death he was a director of Benjamin Whittaker, Ltd., Victoria House, Southampton Row,. London, W.C.1.
