By Roanna Avison WITH A VIEW to cutting the number of HGVs clogging its narrow streets. the city of Bath is due to pilot an experimental freight consolidation scheme.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has received €3.975m (£3.14m) in European Union funding to improve the transport in Bath — and as part of this, 077,000 (&609,000) has been earmarked for a pilot transhipment depot.

The city is basing its plans on a similar scheme in Bristol. In the next 18 months, the council will put the operation of the facility out to competitive tender and the successful bidder will be charged with sourcing a depot and vehicles, The depot will then run for 18 months as a pilot project.

A council spokesman says that after the pilot, the project will be evaluated to judge its commercial success. "It may have been successful, in which case it will continue; it may have been reasonably successful but need a council subsidy to continue; or it may have been a complete disaster, in which case it will not continue."

The consolidation centre in Bristol on which the transhipment depot is being based has reduced vehicle movements in the city by 7,639 a year.

City councilor Charles Gerrish says the depot will benefit hauliers because it will save their vehicles considerable time.

He adds: "The freight transhipment depot is likely to operate smaller, electric vehicles adopting a just-in-time delivery approach, resulting in HGV vehicles trips into Bath being significantly reduced."
