ARAN by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders precludes the exhibition at this year's Royal Show of commercial vehicles other than those of the Land Rover type or special purpose

machines, such as loggers, cattle trucks and horseboxes.

Increasing use is being made by farmers of their tractors for general transport purposes, and trailer makers pre meeting the needs of agriculture with types that are not only efficient for their task but are built to withstand the most strenuous conditions. These and other exhibits which come within the scope of The Commercial Motor are dealt with in this forecast.

The Show, which is held at Blackpool from July 7-10, opens at 8 a.m. on the first day, Tuesday, and at 9 a.m. on other days; closing time will be 8 p.m. each day. Rates of admission are: Tuesday. £1; Wednesday, 10s. before 2 p.m. and 5s. after

that time; Thursday, Ss.; Friday, 2s. 6d. Parking fees are: coaches, 10s. per day and cars 5s.

Among the many types of trailer to be exhibited will be seven models by Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Andover, Hants (Stand 464). Two of the 3-ton two-wheeled tipping models have been designed for attachment to Ferguson and Fordson Major tractors respectively. A third 3-tonner to be shown will be a four-wheeled farm wagon having an 11-ft. 3-in body.

For tractors other than the Ferguson there is the Taskers 35-cwt. two-wheeled hand-screw tipping trailer. A second two-wheeled trailer, also designed for the Ferguson tractor, is of 25-cwt. carrying capacity and has hydraulic tipping gear. The 15-cwt. two-wheeled trailer, which will form another exhibit, is particularly suitable for use behind the Land-Rover, but can be drawn by any type of vehicle. It is fully sprung and can be operated on or off the road.

Taskers also have a carrier box designed for mounting on the front of any of the popular makes of tractor. It can be used for loads of up to 4 cwt. without disturbing any rear-mounted implement, or it will serve as a convenient receptacle for ballast when it is desired to load the front end of the tractor.

On Stand 591, The Salop Trailer Co., Ltd., Old Coleham, Shrewsbury, will have examples of their three-way tipping trailer in both twoand four wheeled forms. The two-wheeler is made in different load-carrying capacities, that for the Ferguson tractor being a 50-cwt. machine. The hydraulic ramgear is operated from the tractor system.

The largest Salop trailer to be shown will be a 6-ton four-wheeled model having twin-ram three-way tipping gear. It has an all-steel electrically welded chassis on which is mounted a 13-ft. by 6-ft. 6-in. 'body, having 18-in, detachable hinged sides.

Among the machines to be shown by Rice Caravans, Ltd., Portland Works, Cosby, near Leicester, on Stand 555, will be .horsebox and. livestock trailers embodying the maker's close-coupled twin-axle arrangement. Advantages claimed for this system include reduced wheel loading, more efficient braking and inherent dynamic stability.

A feature of the exhibit to be staged by Alley Trailers, Ltd., Burnham Market, King's Lynn, Norfolk, on Stand 473, will be new pressed-steel trailers for which a number of outstanding claims is made. Apart from the running gear, each trailer consists of 52 standard parts, with which it is possible to build a low-loader, a fixed platform model, a screwor hydraulically operated rear tipper or a threeway tipper.

A Lightweight 3-tonner As an example of the strength and light weight of these machines, the lowloader, with a 10-ft. by 5-ft. platform body, weighs 8 cwt. when equipped for a payload of about 3 tons. For overseas operators an important feature is that when broken down, the parts will pack into a remarkably small space. All the bolts and nuts, used in the assembly of this trailer are fin. diameter with unified threads.

Other Alley exhibits will comprise a standard heavy-duty three-way tipping trailer, and a heavy-duty low-loader with 12-ft. by 5-ft. 9-in.' moving-floor platform body.

A new combined bale carrier and transporter, will be shown by Whitlock Bros., Ltd., Great Yeldham, Essex, on Stand 455. When used as a bale carrier it is fixed to•the rear of the baler with a three-position double-jaw hitch.

A detachable guard rail and non-slip false floor are provided for the operative. When these are removed the carrier becomes a low-loading trailer having a floor measuring 6 ft. by 5 ft.

Examples of Whitlock Hardiway trailer will be available for inspection. The design of this hydraulic tipper has been modified so that without structural alterations it can readily be converted to make use of the tractor power takeoff, to operate with hand or screw gear, or for service as a fixed-body trailer. As all the conversion parts are interchangeable, it is possible to convert a fixed-body trailer to a hydraulic or screw-gear tipper.

An example of their 3-ton hydraulic tipping trailer will be shown on Stand 603 by Beacon Trailers, Castkiown, Penrith, Cumberland. It has an all-steel chassis and carries a body having 15-in.high sides. The sides and floor are made in tongued-and-grooved boards. It is fitted with a ring hitch to suit the Ferguson automatic coupling device.

Holding the stage for powered commercial vehicles will be a display of five

Land-Rovers and two examples of the Unipower timber tractor. The Rover Co., Ltd., Meteor Works, Solihull, Birmingham (Stand 343), will have on view five examples of the Land-Rover, each of which will be shown with allweather equipment.

There will be one in standard form, another fitted with he rear power take

off Shown as working in conjunction with a Dening 5-ft. mower, and a third with rear power take-off-pulley un; and engine governor operating an Allman circular saw.

stan winch and the remaining one with a Dorman, 50-gallon row-volume crop sprayer driven from the rear power take-off. The two timber tractors to be exhibited by Universal Power Drives, Ltd., Aintree Road, Perivale, Middx. (Stand 547), will be Forester and Hannibal machines. Both these tractors have four-wheel-drive, a self-contained winch capable of developing a pull in excess of 30 tons, and a land anchor.

The heavier of the two vehicles is the Ilannibal, the weight of which is 51 tons in full working order. It is powered by a Gardner five-cylindered oil engine developing a maximum of 85 b.h.p. and producing a torque of 288 lb.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.m. A detachable crane is fitted at the rear for dealing with loads of up to 30 cwt.

A 1.ighter Model

The Forester, which weighs just under 5 tons, has a Gardner four-cylindered oil engine which develops 68 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m. and produces a torque of 230 lb.-ft. at 1.000 r.p.m.

In both tractors the engine power is transmitted through a five speed primary gearbox compounded with two speeds in the transfer case, to the front and rear axles. The winch is driven through the live speeds and reverse of the primary gearbox. Rope pull ranges from 64,000 lb. at 28 ft. per min. to 8,400 lb. at 215 ft. per min.

Vincents, of Reading, Ltd., Station Square; Reading, will occupy Stand 138.

This concern will be showing examples of the Vincent Beckhampton threehorse box. the Vincent livestock carrier, and the Windsor three-horse box. The Windsor is a new model and will be shown on a Bedford chassis.

The interior has been designed for easy conversion from a three-stall layout to one for carrying a mare and her foal. White japanned moleskin is employed for padding the stalls, which are fitted with kicking mats. Seating accommodation for three attendants is provided at the rear of the box.

As the partitions are removable, the vehicle can be used to carry livestock or general farm produce. Side and rear ramps are controlled by Vincent balance springs, which simplify the operation of moving the ramp up and down.

The Bcckhampton three-horse box will carry three full-size horses in separate stalls, each of which is padded with hair canvas and fitted with coconut kicking pads. Side and rear ramps are 'controlled by springs. This box will be shown mounted on a MorrisCommercial passenger chassis.

An Austin chassis is employed as the basis of the livestock vehicle, which has a Luton front, a calf door on the near side and a full-width ramp controlled by a Vincent coil spring.

The feature of the Penman container body to be shown by A. C. Penman, Ltd., Queensbury Motor Works, Dumfries (Stand 167), is the ease with which it can be loaded on to or

removed from the lorry. To remove the container the vehicle is driven between a portable ramp, and as the vehicle moves forward, outstanding members on the bottom of the container run up the ramp and thus lift the container from the floor of the vehicle. The container to be shown will be designed as a livestock carrier and will be mounted on an Austin 5-ton chassis with Penman steel-underframe body.
