'TONNAGE carried and miles .I. travelled by British Road Services continued at a lower level than last year, but revenue is well maintained. Figures just issued by the British Transport Commission show that in the first 20 weeks of the year, B.R.S. carried 1.6m. tons less than in the comparable period of 1952 and covered 21.4m. fewer miles. This year's tonnage figure was 15.3m. and the mileage 262.1m.
In the four weeks to June 14 this year, revenue totalled £5.7m. and was at the same rate as last year. Aggregate receipts for the first 24 weeks of the year rose from £35.6m. in 1952 to £35.9m. this year.
The provincial and Scottish bus companies of the B.T.C. earned £3.9m. in the four-week period to June 14 last (approximately the same as last year) and receipts for the 24-week period rose from £19.5m. in 1952 to £20.6m, this year.
During the four-week Period. London Transport's earnings advanced from £5.4m. last year to £5.5m. this year and over the 24 weeks from £29.8m. to £30.6m.
