Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE RECENTLY observed the unloading of some coal wagons in the railway goods siding of a small Yorkshire town, which brought home the points raised in the article on terminal delays which appeared in these pages a few weeks ago. '

Three 4-ton lorries werd drawn up beside some 10-ton railway trucks, and, coal was being transferred by hand from truck to lorry. For this purpose, there was a man and a boy in each truck, who were throwing out large and small pieces of coal respectively ! The lorry drivers were not in evidence.

At a reasonable estimate, the loading of each lorry must have taken at least five hours. It was particularly noticed that not one pf the lorries had a tipping body, so that, presumably, a similar delay would occur when the coal reached its destination. This is by no means an exceptional case, and one can but suppose that the haulage contractors concerned are ignorant of the costliness of the process—or find that they can pass it on to their customers! It is high time that the railway companies provided more upto-date means for the hanaling of goods, or that special classes of traffic were handled at depots possessing proper facilities.
