Launched two years ago, Britain's best-selling van continues to lead the panel van field. The new generation Transit scooped International Van of the Year 2007 in one of the most hotly contested years for the award. The new generation Transit may not have benefited from the same comprehensive overhaul as some of its competitors, but the fact the changes were targeted at those areas that aid road efficiency proved a major hit with buyers.

However, the Transit continues to score in a number of areas. For starters, the handling of the van is top class, offering a feeling of on-the-road assurance seldom seen in rival makes, while the loadbox functionality is similarly top class. On the road and test

track the Transit is a willing worker, proving flexible at all road speeds.

The gearshift, now dashmounted as in all the main contenders in the market, is slick and contributes to decent performance with good gear match. In-cab the noise levels are adequate and the level of interior appointment, while using too much cheap plastic, is sufficient to ensure the Transit does not lose out to the competition in this respect.

Recent enhancements -an all-wheel-drive version, plus 200hp engine and ESPensure the Transit stays one step ahead of the opposition.
