RACY

First to enter a recession, first to come out of it that's the UK tractor market. So who were the winners and losers, the volume players and niche performers in 2001? We asked the 10 tractor manufacturers two simple questions: what was your top-selling tractor in 2001—and what will be your best seller by the end of 2002? Their answers show what you bought last year and what they want you to buy in 2002. Report by Ilan Weat.arley and '.2vin

• Looking back, 2001 will probably be remembered a the year when the switch to 6x2 artics was finally con solidated—nine out of our Top 10 contenders are six wheelers—and then halted. Operators wanting 4 tonnes have had no other option but to buy a six wheeler. Yet the desire to carry the maximum amount o fuel, especially if you're on international work, and me recently the fall in two-axle tractor VED rates have deli nitely blunted the charge of the 6x2 brigade.

Last December CM analysed the latest registratio figures for artics and asked the 10 manufacturers i the market to list their top-selling tractors. Using tha data we've come up with our very own UK Tractor Top 10 But beware—chart positions vary significant depending on whether you loot at two or three-ax tractors. Our Top 10 is based on overall positions in th market for ALL artics over 29-twines GCW (see below) and we've highlighted firms' biggest soling tractors las year on the grounds that they couldn't have done it wit out that particular modet Finally, we've listed each m ufacturer's position in the both the 4x2 and 6x2 sect • Our results are based on the registration figures avail able up to and including 6 December 2001; barring an last-minute big fleet deals they're not likely to hay changed much during the final 25 days of December although as we closed for press Scania and Daf were ni and tuck for second place. Either way, we'll be runnin the final year-end figures in two weeks' time when an "wrongs" will be righted!
