Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Scania's introduction of the boxy Series 3 cab about three years ago gave little risk of an identity crisis. From the front at least it maintains the familiar Scania styling. The R version, usually specified for trunking operations, offers a high level of trim and a single bunk. The Scania R113's steering and driving positions are adjustable as with many of the current generation of tractive units, but the highlight of the interior must be the curved binnacle.

The air-to-air charge-cooled six-cylinder in-line DSC11-17 11-litre engine, introduced in the UK just over a year ago, supersedes both the turbocharged 1)51173 and charge-cooled DS11-16, giving higher levels of torque at reduced engine speed. Although badged as a 320, this tractive unit's engine is rated at only 228kW (306hp) at 2,000rprn, a little less than most other vehicles in the group, but its torque output of 1,405Nrn (1,036Ibft) developed low at 1,100rpm is a match for some larger capacity engines.

Air suspension is more commonly spe6fied for the drive axle by our EC partners and the Scania is no exception..

While all the other entrants specify either 16 or 18 speeds, Scania's own range-change gearbox provides just 10 ratios which can't give the same degree of flexibility: perhaps the company's recently announced 14-speed box will help address this. However, the results belie the theory, and despite starting the route with only 1,590km recorded on the clock, the R113 gave the Mercedes-Benz 1733 a close run on overall fuel consumption but was marginally slower over every section.

Perhaps as a result of having fewer gears to work with the driver allowed engine revs to rise to around 1,600-1,800 but as a consequence made fewer gearchanges than recorded for the other vehicles with more gears and closer ratios.

On the A roads and on the motorway the driver was inclined to allow the vehicle to overspeed on the overrun downhill but although faster than the Daf with the best fuel consumption, overall journey times were slow.
