Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NNOUNCED as an optional extra for

Plaxton coaches earlier this year, a system of seat attachment (for which patent application has been made) is now to be seen on the Embassy III demonstration coach which Plaxtons (Scarborough) Ltd. has on the road.

The principal advantage claimed for the system is that, since there is no need to remove bolts or screws, and actual seat fittings do not pass through the floor, seat pitch can be altered and seats removed or replaced quickly and simply.

The attachment system is shown in the accompanying drawing. On the gangway side the two seat pedestals have claws at their lower ends which engage with a correspondingly slotted metal rail running the length of the saloon. This rail is fixed to the floor and the pedestals are held firm on the rail by tightening-down a threaded set-screw which is housed within the recess afforded by the channel section (seen in plan) of the pedestals. The setscrew engages also with a vee in the floor rail, preventing the claw feet from being withdrawn.

Used on the outer side of each seat are attachments which, although of Plaxtons design, are not part of the

patent application. Here, short anglepiece legs are used, bearing on a full-length alloy seat rail of special section. As the drawing shows, this section has a bull-nose which is clamped between the lower flat of the seat leg and a special clamping block. Slackening the bolt which holds the clamping block allows the block to fall clear of the bull-nose, so that the whole seat can be withdrawn sideways. Forward or rearward movement of seats is achieved simply by slackening the clamps and sliding the seats.
