OLI.OWING an amendment to an

application by J. and E. Transport Ltd., Haslingden, an objection by British Railways was withdrawn and the modified form granted by the North Western deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. G. Newman. at Manchester last week. Initially, the applicant had_asked for one B-licensed van to be used for collection and delivery work within 25 miles, and two A-licensed vehicles of 7i tons to be used in connection with trunk services. The company also wished to amend the normal user of its existing A licence to cover the carriage of engineering goods and chemicals. Mr. J. Entwistle, managing director of J. and F. Transport, said that if the three new vehicles were granted there would be an increase in tmladen weight of 10-4 per cent to the existing fleet. There was a lack of collection and delivery facilities, he said, so that delays were occurring. The new vehicles would help to absorb the increase in business which had arisen during the past year. On the Scottish trunk sonic consignments were dropped off at Carlisle, continued Mr. Entwistle, and now customers were asking for these goods to be distributed direct instead of the loads going to depots to be broken down. Textiles and yarns had been the main traffic but now the company was being asked to carry engineering goods

and chemicals,

Following a brief adjournment, Mr. J.

Backhouse, for the applicant, said that his client wished to withdraw the B application and would use the A vehicles for trunk and delivery work.
