WHEN a new 180-ft. long transit shed IT at Brown Lane came into operation on December 30, B.R.S. (Parcels) Ltd. took another big step towards the completion of its long-term programme to streamline operations in Leeds. In 1954 B.R.S. had six parcels depots in or near to the city. Today it has two: Brown Lane, Leeds 11, a modern property where the new transit shed has been erected, and Whitehall Road, Leeds 12, where, in addition to parcels operations, maintenance and warehousing is carried on. The intention is, in due course, to locate all operations at Brown Lane.

The new transit shed will be used for outward trunking.. All collection vehicles will be unloaded there and the traffic will pass to the outward trunk vehicles across the double-sided 45-ft.-wide bank which stretches the full length of the shed. The new bank, which has built-in provision for the possible installation of a carousel conveyor, is surfaced with maple. The main building is of steel-frame construe tion, clad with asbestoscement sheeting above dwarf brick walls.

Semi-live stitlages and tug-bars, similar to those already in use on the present Brown Lane platform, will be used on the bank. The shed is protected to the north by a covered yard which gives 602ft, headway from the bank, and to the south by a 15-ft. canopy and "up and over" doors.

One side of the present platform, which is 234 ft. long, will be used for the receipt of all incoming trunk services from other parts of the country and the traffic will be sorted across the platform to the various delivery rounds.

The opening of the new transit shed is a major phase in the full development of the Brown Lane site, Work is already in 1-"A A NEW pair of refrigerated meat

The offices will eventually hous both the North Eastern area manage] Mr. H. L. Fenton, and his staff who wil be moving from their present premises ii Clarendon Roafi, Leeds; and the Leed branch manager, Mr. A. E. Keit.

To the south-east of the new transi shed work is also progressing on a six bay service station, with four pits.

A number of ancillary buildings an being constructed, including a canteen, t vehicle wash and a fuelling point. It planned to have the whole depot in ful use by the coming summer.

The concentration at Brown Lane o all B.R.S. parcels activities in Leeds,' says Mr. Fenton, " will enable us to maki further improvements in our service. I will also provide the capacity fo: increasing our business in the area." *
