AFTER a drop in exports in September, overseas' sales of commercial vehicles in October recuperated and the level of trade was Lim. higher than in the previous mouth. Figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that 10,673 commercial vehicles, ineluding-dumpers, dump trucks, industrial trucks and trailers, were exported in October, compared with 8,674 in September. Details are given in the accompanying table. During October, 24,489 goods vehicles, road haulage tractors and special-type vehicles were produced, together with 147 battery-electrics, and the total passenger-vehicle output was 857. Weekly average output was 6,372 of all types, making 25,488 for the month, compared with 30,762 in September. Of the goods vehicles, road haulage tractors and special types made in October, 12.293 were of under l5-cwt. capacity, 5,651 between 15 cwt. and 3 ions, 4,537 from 3-6 tons, and 2.008 over 6 tons. Of the passenger vehicles, 699 were single-deck and 148 double-deck motorbuses and 10 were trolleybuses. In the 10 months ended October, 222,753 goods vehicles, road haulage tractors and special types were produced. made up of 113,117 of up to 15-cwt. capacity, 47,757 from 15 cwt. to 3 tons, 42,851 from 3-6 tons, and 19,028 over 6 tons.

There were also produced 1.586 battery-electrics and 7,627 passenger vehicles. of which 5,677 were single-deck and 1,840 double-deck motorbuses, and 110 trolleybuses. Overall total for the 10 months was 231,966.

B.T.C. WANT TO ATTRACT BOYS largest model ever built to show Til:ritish Transport Commission activities is being displayed at the National Schoolboys Own Exhibition in London. It occupies 550 sq. ft. on a two-floor stand in the main exhibition hall, and is supplemented by an information counter and a block of private interview rooms. Among the devices being exhibited is the new electronic scanning indicator for controlling London's buses (The Commercial Motor, December 27). The display is aimed at showing the careers which the Commission can offer schoolleavers. Sir Brian Robertson, chairman of the B.T.C., opened the exhibition on Tuesday.

EXPORTS AND OUTPUT IMPROVE

EXPORTS of . goods vehicles in November last year totalled 10,988 and of public service vehicles 550, bringing exports for the three months from September to November up to 28,623 and 1,320 respectively. In November, 1956, 8,437 goods vehicles and 391 buses and coaches were sold abroad, taking the September-November overseas sales for the year up to 25,819 and 957 respectively. Output for November last, with figures for November. 1956, in parentheses, consisted of 26,034 goods vehicles (19,807). and 925 public service vehicles (789). From September to November last year 80,195 goods vehicles were produced (62,564) and 2.699 buses and coaches (2,628).
