THE 57-minute bus journey between Nottingham and Derby—a distance of 15 miles—is commonly known among passengers as "the slow boat to China," the East Midland Traffic Commissioners heard on Monday. They reserved decision on an application by Barton Transport, Ltd., and the Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., to operate an . hourly service between the cities, using the newly opened Borrowash by-pass (The Commercial Motor, December 20. 1957).

Mr. R. Seely-Whitby, for Barton, said the present service had 60 stops, and there was no doubt that a quicker route was needed.

For the objectors, British Railway's. Mr. A. J. F. Wrottesley pointed out that a new Diesel service linking Nottingham and Derby would be started this year. Rail passengers were increasing and he thought there had been a decline in bus traffic.

TV CAMERAS AID TRAFFIC POLICEMAN

WITH the aid of Pye television cameras, the constable on traffic duty in Durham Market Square can now judge the number of approaching vehicles by looking at a receiver in his box, and operate traffic lights appropriately.

The television equipment, said to be the first of its kind to be used in Britain, was brought into operation on Tuesday by Mr. G. R. H. Nugent, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport.

MIXED FLEET DIFFICULTIES

DECAUSE of the difficulties in operat ing a fleet of both Aand B-licensed vehicles, J. Smith (Bicknor).Ltd., English Bicknor, Glos.., applied to the Western Licensing Authority on Monday to transfer seven B-licence vehicles to their A licence, mainly to carry solid fuels and road and building materials within 50 miles.

Supporting evidence included a mention of the Usk Mouth B power station project and its attendant need for materials. On the Licensing Authority's suggestion, the. applicants negotiated with the objectors—the railways, British Road Services and Reads Transport, Ltd.—and it was eventually agreed that Smith's should seek a suitable modification of their B licence.
