CERTAIN double-deck, four-wheeled buses were put into service in June, 1942, and, to legalize the position concerning these, the Minister of Transport has issued the Public Service Vehicles (Conditions of Fitness) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations, 1946. LATEST IN TANKERS

ANEW note in tanker design is struck by a Morris-Commercial 240-gallon vehicle which has just been placed in service by the Sheffield and District Gas Co. It is the first of three similar vehicles to take the road. The Sheffield and District Gas Co. is one of the largest public utility` companies in the country, and operates a fleet of 70 commercial vehicles.

The tank and valences were designed by Mr. W. Woodcock, transport and mechanical superintendent of the company. W. P. Butterfield, Ltd., Shipley. built the mild-steel tank, and Marston Excelsior, Ltd., Meadowhead, Sheffield,

completed the panelling work. The valences are built up of angle framework, covered with Alclad sheets.

A door on the near side, behind the driver's cab, gives access to a semi-rotary pump, which is attached to the chassis, and to the front of the tank. A similar door on the off side enables the spare wheel and the filling orifice of the petrol tank to be reached.

A hose reel is mounted on the chassis and carries 25 ft. of piping. At the rear there is a spacious locker for the equipment required to syphon liquid from 1,400 miles of gas mains, serving an area a 328 square miles.
