Some Timely flints and Wrinkles.

• Gas Container Trailers.

The Local Government Board, in order to meet the request of the Petroleum Executive to secure • greater economy in the consumption of petrol by encouraging the employnient of coalgas for the propulsion of heavy motorcars has relaxed the regulations at present governing trailers drawn by iteavy motorcars, so as to permit the more extended use of trailers for.the accommodation of gas holders.

Under Article VII of the Heavy Meter Car Order, 1904, as it stands, a

heavy motorcar drawing a trailer is restricted to a speed of five miles per hour. The ,Order which the Board, after consultation with the Gas Traction. Oonimittee, has now issued removes this restriction in the case of a heavy nicitOrear drawing a gas Container trailer as fined inin the new Order. Accordingly; a ' heavy motorcar .drawiro, a" gas' Container trailer will be allawea ,'?•o proceed at the -speed permitted by ''Artible 1.11I of the

Order of 1904 in the case of the same heavy motorcar when it is not drawing a trailer.

It will be obServed that, for the 'purposes of this Order, a 'gas container trailer " is a vehicle constructed or adapted for use and used solely for carrying a bag or other receptacle for containing gas to be used for the purpose of. prepelling the vehicle; and in order to comply with the 'requirements of the Order the unladen weight of the gas con tamer trailer must hot exceed 15 cwt., while its wheels must be fitted with pneumntic tyres, or 'with tyres made of

.soft or Qiastic material. The Order applies only during the period Of the war and 12 months thereafter.

Filling -Pipe Too: Small.

• One criticism was made : to us , by .NOrthampton users which • we would coffin-lend to the 'attentionof the manufacturars of the Lyon-,Spencer bag. The diameter of the charging pipe shp-. plied is declared to be tan small to facili tate rapid filling. In the case of large vehicles 25. minutes are often involved in the operation, to the detriment of • vehicles waiting behind in the queue. The .gas company suggest thatthe makers should provide a filling pipe . of larger bore, otherwise a filling charge will have to be levied. At the moment a bag of this type is said to be .handicapped. If two vehicles come up for charging, One fitted with a Lyon-Spenc;er bagand the other with one of another male, but haying a larger filling pipe, the last-named receives prier attention, although it may he behind 'the firstr...uned vehicle. We suggest that Ernest Lyon, Ltd., should give thismatter their Prompt attention, so as to bring their clients more into line with users of other bags. , It is not difficult to remedy.
