Bevan & Sons was formed in Newport, South Wales, in the first part of the 20th century by Russell Bevan’s grandfather. The initial Bevan fleet was powered by horses, rather than fossil fuels.

Bevan’s father took over the day-to-day running of the family firm. “My brother and I used to help out too,” he says, “and as soon as I was old enough I was driving a Morris 1000 van for him.” He passed his HGV test at the tender age of 21 and took to the road in a Volvo F89.

In 1985, Bevan took over the reins from his father, while his brother decided to set up his own haulage firm. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the firm pulled a lot of containers for Bell Lines Newport (later Avonmouth). And when this came to an end, the new list of customers included Bridgend-based Sony and Hasbro Toys in Newport.

“Over the years we’ve pulled every sort of container imaginable,” says Bevan.
