VIERSEYTRAVEL IS planning a radical restructuring of the Mersey runnel tolls in which the price for wavy trucks could be cut from £4.80 to £3.90 in April.

Under its plans current toll :lasses 1 and 2 will be merged with new fee of £1.30: a 10p increase or cars but a 90p reduction per ourney for light vans and buses. Toll classes 3 and 4 will be amal;amated with a new rate of £3.90. l'his equates to an increase of 30p or three-axle trucks. over 3.5 onnes GVW but a reduction of )Op for the largest vehicles.

Fast Tag users in both former :ategories will pay £3.45.

This follows the passing of the vlersey Tunnels Act, which allows Mersey-travel to impose toll increases, using the profits to fund transport projects in the area.

Councillor Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel,says:"We have borne in mind the part Merseytra v el must play in helping to stimulate the social and economic regeneration of the region."

Local operator John Ball from John Ball Haulage welcomes the move: "This will be a great help to us. Anything that saves a few pennies off the cost of haulage has got to be a good thing."

The proposals will now go before the full meeting of the Metseytrav el PassengerTransport Authority on 7 February. If approved, the tolls will come into force inApril.
