jobs will be at risk in the UK transport industry, the Post Office told a powerful parliamentary select committee this week.

Royal Mail's own 28,000 vehicle fleet and British transport contractors involved with carrying cargos of magazines and direct mail were under unnecessary fire from commercial European post offices, Post Office chairman, Mike Heron warned.

Giving evidence to the allparty Trade and Industry Select Committee on the future of the Post Office, Heron said the Dutch post office, for example. was able to take business away from the UK by offering combined printing and distribution services to magazine publishers.

He also said GD-Net, the TNT alliance with some other post offices, posed a "significant threat" as it expanded into Royal Mail's letter and electronic mail markets.
