QTRONG support for the development 1---1 of a park-and-be-driven policy for motorists coming into Manchester was voiced by Mr. George Brook, chairman of the North Western section of the Institute of Transport at their annual dinner last week. Mr. Brook urged the need for extensive free or cheap car parks on the perimeter from which travellers would use public transport into the centre, He thought large underground or multistorey parks, while keeping cars off the streets during the busy hours, might lead to congestion at peak periods when the vehicles arrived at or left the parking area in large numbers. The Lord Mayor, Alderman A. Donovan, said that thousands of manhours were lost through cars being parked all day in the city streets. Mr. Rowland Thomas, president of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said that because success in exports was dependent on the efficient transport of goods to their destination, a great responsibility rested on the industry to ensure that operations were carried through without waste. Mr. W. E. Macve presented his prize for outstanding performance in the Institute examination, to Mr. F. S. Heckman.
