Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INCLUDED in the wide range of engineering products of John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., Leeds, are trailers of various types, relight from two-wheelers up to special machines for loads of 80 tons and 100 tons. One of the most popular models is the 5-6-ton trailer mountedon pneumatics. Duritg the past few weeks a further type has been added to the range ; it consists of a four-wheeler for 8-ton lomls.

Rolled-steel channels are used for the frame; these are braced and gusseted, the cross-members extending to the full width of the body, in order to give adequate support and to carry with safety a badly distributed load. Care has been taken to provide the maximum diameter for the mild-steel rings of the turntable, which rotates about a springloaded king-pin carried in a cast-steel bearing. The spring loading of the king-pin acts as a form of shock absorber. Attached to the einge bar at the front of the forecarriage is a solidforged drawbar, with two bracing members spot-welded in position ; a springloaded drawbar eye is optional. Semi-elliptic springs are used fore and aft. In each case these are posi

the springs being imposed upon them and, in each case, secured by four bolts, with adequate provision for security of the locking nuts. The hubs are carded upon the axles on roller bearings, ample provision being made for taking thrust.

In the rear-wheel hubs are two-shoe internal-expanding brakes of generous proportions and fully enclosed. The brakes are cable-operated from the towing vehicle and a horizontal hand lever, mounted amidships, provides an operating medium for use when parking. The cables pass around guide pulleys to ob,aiate " flapping "; in addition to the internal pull-off springs there are external. ones, taking effect upon downward extensions of the camshaft levers.

Detachable steel disc wheels are carried upon ten-stud hubs ; the spare wheel is carried in a horizontal position below the centre of the body.

Every bearing is provided with Tecalemit grease-gun connections.

Any type of body can be mounted upon this chassis. A special feature employed in cases in which sides and ends are specified is the channel-section hinge which obviates bulging of the body when heavy, loose loads press outwards upon its vertical members.

Extra equipment offered with this Fowler chassis includes spare wheel, tyre, and mounting; inuriguards ; spring drawbar coupling and balancing springs for the drawbar to minimize the effort required in man-handling it.

The leading dimensions of the Fowler 8-ton trailer are :—Body length, 16 ft.; body width, 7 it.; loading height, 4 ft. I in.; wheelbase, 9 ft.; wheel track, 5 ft. 8 ins.; weight with platform body (approximately), 21 tons ; tyre size, 38 ins. by 9 ins.
