Su N FrEA m MOTOR CAR CO., LTD. , and L. COATALEN, No THE BRISTOL WAG 0:^.1' AND CARRIAGE IVORIES CO. LTD., and 108b9, dated 27th July, 1915.—The valve cap, which is screwed E. C. CoAx, No. 2557, dated 17thFebruary, 1915.--The ae-•

low, and the top of the water-jacket casting is open. The edges are machined flat to receive a plate, which closes the water jacket, and in the case of a multi-cylinder engine a single plate may be used extending the whole length of the engine. Preferably, the plate is shaped so as to form part of the water pipe, or to have a-water-pipe attached to it. In most modern engines the valves do not often require attention, but even if it should be found necessary to gain access to them, it is a simple matter to remove the top plate. The more efficient cooling of the valves, however, renders it less likely that they will need very frequent attention.

E. C. R MARKS (THE KREBS COMMERCIAL CAR CO.), No. 24,536, dated -23rd December, 1914.•—in this control gear the governor operates on the throttle and on the timing of the ignition at the same time. An ordinary centrifugal governor operates through a bell-crank lever upon the throttle, which is indicated near the top on the right-hand side of the magneto The hell-crank lever also carries a third arm, which is coupled by a horizontal link and swinging lever to a bell. cranklever operating on the timing gear, This same arm is also connected by a spring to a lever, which is controlled by a cable from ..the dmVer's seat. This cable-controlled lever is also connected to the swinging lever for the timing gear.

The parts are set so as to give the correct throttle opening, and time of ignition for light running, and the driver can effect acceleration by a single lever operating on the cable control. This changes the tension in the spring and re-adjusts the setting of the various parts.

valve for controlling the air inlet to the induction pipe of an internal-combustion engine, or to a carburetter. D. is shown as applied to a rotary throttle valve having a hollow spiedla which serves as the air inlet. The control is effected. by means of a long tapered plunger which is spring controlled to hold it normally closed, but is operated by a Bowden wire from the driver's seat.

A. II. MIDGLEY and C. A. VA NDERV ELL, No. 2619, dated lath February, 1915.—This invention consists of an improved method of Winding the field coils of electric starters, in which the armature is moved longitudinally by the magnetic field to engage it with the engine when starting up. Two coils are provided on each magnet, one having many turns of fine wire and the other a:few turns of thick wire.

In one arrangement four-position switches are used. The.first is the off position. In the second position both the thick and the thin coils are put in series to provide. a strong •field, which will move the armature. In the third position the thin winding is cut out and the machine runs as -a series

.

motor, while in the fourth position the thin winding is cut in again as a shunt and the motor operates as a compound motor. In the modification shown in the drawings only three positions are provided for on the switches. In the second position the two coils are in series with the armature, while in the third position the connections are changed to give series and shunt fields, so that the motor is compounded in the ordinary way.
