Calendars Received.

We have to acknowledge numerous calendars which have been received at this office during the past week or so from many well-known commercial-vehicle and accessory manufacturers. We have not the space at our disposal to include a long detailed list giving the names of the senders, but they are, in most cases, artistically and attractively produced.

Alldays Furnaces for Munition Work. •

We have recently received from Alldays and Onions Pneumatic Engineering Co., Ltd., Matchless Works, Birmingham, a copy of an interesting little book it has just published, which deals folly with special types of :furnaces, suitable for munition work, which the company is producing in large numbers. Furnaces for heating, annealing, melting, etc., are illustrated and described, but, of course, as is well known, this concern manufactures all descriptions of oil, gas, coal and coke-fired furnaces for varying purposes. Interested readers, especially those engaged on munition work, should apply for a copy of this useful booklet at the address given at the beginning of this paragraph.

Underground Petrol Storage.

There has been a tendency, for several years past, on the part of commercial-vehicle users generally to favour, some form of underground installation of petrol. It will be obvious to our readers that such a system has several attractive points to recommend its use.

A concern which has dealt fully with the matter of petrol storage in underground tanks practically since its inception is Messrs. Bywater and Co., 3, Kingsway, Lyndon, W.C. This concern has recently marketed a self-registering pump, for use with such plant, which has .several new and interesting features. One of the chief advantages of this pump is that it is continuous in flow, that is to say, 'that it does not matter which way the handle is turned the liquid will flow in a constant stream on both the up and down strokes of the piston. Of course, •the amount or liquid drawn is registered on a meter, which is claimed to be very

accurate in its reading. It not only records each separate amount of liquid drawn, but also affords a total figure, which-enables the user to have a reliable reading as to the aniount of spirit utilized.

The pump has quantity stops. adjusted and set for pint, quart, half-gallon and gallon measures. A most important point is that all the valves are placed 'In the head of the pump, thereby being rendered accessible, so that they can be removed, with an ordinary

spanner, cleaned and replaced in a very short time. Another point which has been carefully considered i.4 that, should any dirt find its way into the main: storage tank and afterwards be sucked up by th8 pump, it would find its way to the foot valves an prevent them working efficiently. On many storage' systems the foot valve is placed in an inaccessible position, but on the tanks supplied by Messrs, Bywater and Co. a horizontal double foot valve is' placed above the top of the tank. By the removal of two plugs, the valves can be cleaned with the greatest

This pump is compact, strong and durable, and is made of well-chosen material. The cylinder, stuffing box, piston rod, valves and valve seats are all constructed of good-quality brass which is accurately machined. Of course, the pumps are adaptable to any quality or grade of spirit. The outfit is especiallydesigned for storing and distributing petrol and oil in a safe, clean and convenient manner, and there is little doubting that with the underground tank the risk of fire or explosion is' eliminated, whilst the spirit. is kept-in a. better condition. Quite a number of industrial-vehicle users do not appreciate the large amount of waste which continually takes place when petrol or oil is handled in tins. With a pump of this kind loss is prevented, whilst evaporation does not occur.

There are many large users of this storage 'plant, amongst which may be mentioned the British War Department.

A number of types of pumps is made by the company, for varying uses, but particularly those connected with the problem of underground storage of liquids in a satisfactory manner.
