THE SENTENCING of a coach operator found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter has sent a "clear and stark warning" to all transport operators, according to North Yorkshire police.

Last month, coach driver Robert Oughton, of 1.4 You Coaches, was sentenced to five years and three months after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and gross negligent manslaughter. Paul and Deborah Clements were killed on 21 September 2008 when a coach driven by Ough ton struck their car.

Oughton's business partner,John Low, was jailed for three years also for gross negligent manslaughter. North Yorkshire police and VOSA found that the cause of the collision was acute brake failure owing to a lack of maintenance.

Detective Superintendant Helen Taylor said the outcome "sends a clear and stark warning to transport providers of the catastrophic consequences should they choose to cut corners in the maintenance and upkeep of vehicles':
