Big Train steams ahead

Drivers keen to continue with their CPC training can sign up for the next Big Train event, which is scheduled for the new year.

By Witt Shiers FIG V LICENCE-HOLDERS who want to sign-up for CM's Big Train CPC training at Chester Racecourse on January 29 and 30 are being given the option of four different courses. The same four courses will run on both the Friday and the Saturday.

Training provider Fraikin has provided the following course summaries, which will help delegates choose subjects that suit their needs.

HGV-specific regulations, loading and best practice

Summary: To ensure all delegates understand the regulations concerning the carriage of goods and how to load in the correct manner. Subjects covered: • Carriage of goodsbasic driver rules, national and international laws regarding the carriage of goods. national and international legislation regarding ADR, contracts and permits, security of loads, GVW and payloads, weighbridges and on-board weighing devices.

• Load safety types of loads, calculating volumes and we ights,route plann ng,posi boning of loads, penalties and consequences of overloading, vehicle stability, packaging, load security and securing devices, loading and unloading of vehicles.

The rules and regulations governing the road transport and passengercarrying industries

Summary: To ensure all delegates understand the regulations governing professional driving. Subjects covered:

• Working Time Directive who is subject to the regulations, what is and isn't working time, what are the limits.

• Road Transport Directive availability, periods, average weekly work times, rest breaks • Record keeping tachographs • EU rules derogations, driving time, breaks and driving limits, rest periods, multi-manning.

• GB domestic rules PSVi PCV rules

Health, road and environmental safety Summary: To ensure all delegates are aware of the risk of the road, incidents, contributing factors and how to prevent them.

Subjects covered:

• Accidents accident management, causes. statistics.

• The night before alcohol, drugs and driving, hazard perception.

• Getting ready driver fatigue and stress, ergonomics, posture.

• On the move hand-held equipment. 'road rage', spending nights away, deliveries.

• Road smart quiz.

Vehicle safety, control systems and fuel efficiency

Summary: To ensure all delegates are familiar with and understand the necessary techniques to operate the vehicle in a safe and fuelefficient manner.

Subjects covered:

• Driver checks and defect reporting driver check DVD, defect reporting, remedial action, duty of the driver and repairer.

• Vehicle limits what the driver needs to know, vehicle familiarisation.

• Key factors in safe driving forward planning, loads and their position, braking and its application, weather conditions.

• Key factors in fuel-efficient driving vehicle aerodynamics, transmission and its correct use. tyres, speed, revs and emissions.
