• The managing director of two Irish haulage firms that went bust owing a total of half a million punts has denied that he is back in business.

Gordon Cuthbert was managing director of Dublin-based Alpha Transport International (ATI) until a liquidator was appointed last month—ATI has debts of £422,000.

Since then it has emerged he was also managing director of Alpha Transport, which was liquidated in September 1996 with unpaid taxes of £130,000.

Cuthbert denies that he has resumed operations for United Beverages, where ATI former ly had three trucks working. "I am not working in any form for United Beverages. I am driving a truck for somebody else," he says.

But Peter Wall, operations director for UB, says two trucks supplied by Cuthbert are working for his firm.

"We would not deal with him unless everything was in order," Wal stresses.

Cuthbert says ATI's business was mostly to the Continent. "Our core business was in groupage," he adds. "Bad rates and delays and inability in getting productivity from trucks caused the failure."
