• Logistics business leaders have given a thumbs-up to the haulage industry's continuing fight against Government fuel duty increases.
The majority of 300 logistics professionals responding to a survey said the Government should not make increased haulage taxes a priority.
Instead they urged it to improve the guidance between local authorities and the haulage industry over best practice on deliveries into city centres. The results of the survey were revealed at last week's Logistics 98 conference in London.
Other respondents called on local government to allow night deliveries, to allow more loading bays and to designate more lorry priority lanes.
Brian Wadsworth, director of freight, distribution, and logistics at the Department of Transport, says a series of workshops will be held with industry professionals, academics and local authorities on the topic of city distribution from the start of next year.
